Our Sedation Dentistry Options

Our Sedation Dentistry Options
In your endodontic evaluation, we take the time to get to know you, put you at ease, and walk you through the types of sedation we offer. Conscious sedation, sometimes referred to as “twilight dentistry”or “sleep dentistry” helps reduce anxiety, discomfort and pain during dental procedures. This is accomplished with local anesthesia (or numbing medications, sometimes referred to as “novocaine”) for your tooth and the addition of oral, nasal, or IV medications.

Most patients choose local anesthetic, in which we numb your mouth. Following a review of your medical history, additional relaxation options may be offered including taking an oral pill 1hr prior to your procedure, inhaling nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, or receiving a sedative through an intravenous (IV) line. Note: oral pill medications and IV sedation relaxation and sedation routes require a friend or family member drive you home following your procedure and therefore require a consultation appointment prior to scheduling dental treatment.

We will take the time during your evaluation and consultation appointment to discuss details for all available sedation choices.

IV Sedation - A Deeper Form of Relaxation
Our in-house pain management team is here to help you relax. For those requesting deeper relaxation, or who want to “sleep during the procedure”, we offer intravenous (IV) conscious sedation. This mode of sedation is safe and effective as one remains conscious and still breaths on their own throughout the procedure. We currently offer our IV sedation services at both of our office locations — provided by our in-house certified registered nurse anesthetist, Robert Rota C.R.N.A., Ph.D.

With decades of experience and knowledge, his pain management team provides constant, personal, and state-of-the-art electronic sedation monitoring, while your doctor and support team remain focused on providing quality endodontic care without distractions.

Please keep in mind that IV sedation services require advanced scheduling. A consultation appointment is needed for full examination prior to care with IV sedation and a friend or relative must be available to drive you home following your sedation procedure. Although most insurance programs do not cover IV sedation services for dental procedures, we provide a billing statement to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. See our sedation welcome letter for more information on IV sedation fees and services. To book these services, please contact our office today.

Sedation Dentistry Keeps you Comfortable

Treating your tooth pain does not need to be painful. When your general dentist refers you to one of our offices in Colorado Springs or Pueblo, you can relax knowing that our dental care specialists use the latest in sedation dentistry to make your procedure as pleasant as possible. Different Types of Sedation Dentistry

We can provide local anesthetics, oral pills, IV drips, or nitrous oxide for patients during endodontic procedures. Although most insurance programs do not cover IV sedation dentistry services, we provide a billing statement to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. See our sedation welcome letter for more information on IV sedation fees and services. To book these services, contact our office today.

Local Anesthesia: Local anesthesia (like novacaine) numbs the area your endodontist will work by blocking your nerves from sending pain signals to your brain by injecting it directly into the affected area. Conscious sedation dentistry numbing effects typically last for an hour or two, but in some patients it can last for three to five hours after the surgery. We regularly recommend local anesthesia since it suits most patients, and they remain conscious and able to drive home after the procedure without it inhibiting their movements or awareness.

Oral Sedation Dentistry: For patients seeking deep relaxation during a procedure, we offer oral pills that you’ll take about an hour prior to the procedure. We typically use pills from the diazepam (Valium®) family, but zaleplon and lorazepam work equally well. This form of oral sedation dentistry makes patients sluggish and even sleepy, but they’ll respond to gentle nudges to be able to communicate with their dentist. If you choose this or IV sedation, you’ll need to provide us with the number of someone to drive you home from the procedure or bring them along with you.

IV Drips: Our in-house pain management team is here to help you relax. For those requesting deeper relaxation, or who want to “sleep during the procedure”, we offer intravenous (IV) conscious sedation. This mode of sedation provides a safe and effective method since you remain conscious and still breathe on their own throughout the procedure.

We currently offer our IV sedation services at both of our office locations — provided by our in-house certified registered nurse anesthetist, Robert Rota C.R.N.A., Ph.D.. Nitrous Oxide: If injections and pills don’t appeal to you, we also offer nitrous oxide for patients. This odorless to slightly sweet smelling gas creates mild sedation when inhaled alongside oxygen. Within minutes of inhaling it, you feel less inhibited and light-headed, tingly, and your limbs may feel heavy. It brings you to a complete calmness so that your anxiety fades without letting you fall asleep so that you can respond to your endodontist’s promptings. This makes a great option for patients not responding to local anesthesia.

How To Determine Which Level of Sedation Is Right For You

Most patients only need minimal sedation to relax enough for the doctor to do their job without experiencing pain. Local anesthesia fits most patients’ needs well enough alongside the amenities provided to keep their bodies comfortable and their minds occupied.

We offer deeper levels of sedation for patients with high levels of anxiety or fear towards dental procedures. These options usually require someone picking the patient up from our offices after the procedures since the sedation lasts for longer periods and affects the whole body.

Talk with your endodontist about your concerns and needs to find the right level of sedation for you!

What To Expect During Sedation Dentistry

You should feel very calm and relaxed during the procedure with sedation dentistry. As long as you don’t choose the deep sedation option, you’ll technically be awake, but your demeanor will be very nonchalant and relaxed. You will not feel any pain, but you may feel the doctor working on the area. Some people do fall asleep, but patients usually respond well to gentle nudges, questions, and directions posed by the doctor. For people with anxiety or phobias related to dentistry, deep sedation provides an excellent option.
